A while ago for some reason---okay, it was when Dustin Pedroia signed his seven-year extension with the Red Sox---I was looking up how many second basemen actually stick at that position very late in their careers. The list is astonishingly short: Rogers Hornsby, Joe Morgan, a handful of other guys, all of whom you've heard of. And there's Gehringer... you really forget how long he was that astonishingly good he was at a very, very hard position to play for long.
Anyway, just me being mawkish about old ballplayers.
